Stan Telchin has said so many things in public about himself that are now in question, it is (in the words of one pastor who heard him speak) "Difficult to know what is true and what is a lie." I understand how the pastor feels as I have heard Stan make outrageous statements to his audiences that are almost hard to believe such as; "I was 'Man of the Year' for the Hebrew Home for the Aged in Washington, DC"; "I have part of my Ph.D"; "I have multiple advanced degrees"; "I was ordained"; "12 million people have read my book".. etc. Anyone listening to Stan would come away believing him to be an imminent biblical scholar with multiple advanced degrees to include a PhD and one of the best selling authors in human history. Nothing could be further from the truth and what follows is a corrected biography for Stan. I have asked my father to stop using me in his testimony. He has consistently refused to honor my request.

I grew so weary of my father's gross lying and misrepresentations about me personally and about our family, and after my father repeatedly refused to stop his deception, I finally wrote Baker Book House in January 2007 and asked them to remove my name and all references to me in the latest revised version of 'Betrayed!' due for release in Summer 2007. Baker Book House agreed to my request (click here to see the correspondence from Baker).

ON HIS EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL CAREER:

Stan's formal education is in theater. Unable to obtain enough work as an actor, Stan eventually goes into the insurance business.

"Both my MA and BA degrees were in theatre. After trying unsuccessfully to obtain work in theater and teaching, I decided to change careers. In the Fall of 1951 I was employed by the United Jewish Appeal in New York City in their public relations department. In late Spring of 1952, I was employed by the State of Israel Bond Organization in Washington, DC. In 1953, when the manager of this office went into the public relations business for himself, he invited me to become and account executive with him and I did so for the next two years.  I traveled extensively for him.  That is when I realized that this career had little to offer on a long term basis and so I began to consider other opportunities.

On July 21, 1955, I entered the life insurance business with the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company and remained an agent with them until I left to plant my church. I became a member of the Million Dollar Round Table in 1956 and was a member of this august organization for 22 consecutive years.  I also qualified for the Top Of The Table - an elite group of people. In 1959 I received my Chartered Life Underwriter designation and for the next five years taught CLU classes at the George Washington University."

This is a photo of my father in his younger years when he was studying to be an actor. So many people have expressed surprise to learn that my father's only formal education was in theatre. They express greater surprise to learn that his only formal religious training was a nine month stint at Kenneth Hagin's RHEMA Bible school in Oklahoma in the late 1970's (click here). My father does not have a PhD as he has told people (click here); there is no evidence that he was ever ordained as he claims (click here); he does not have multiple advanced degrees as he has claimed (click here); and his doctorate degree was an honorary degree given to him for speaking at a graduation at a now defunct school (click here); he was never "Man of the Year" for the Hebrew Home for the Aged as he has claimed (click here); and finally, 14 million people have not read his book "Betrayed!" as he claims (click here).

ON HIS ORDINATION, MINISTERIAL TRAINING AND EDUCATION:

Stan was never formally enrolled in a seminary program for an advanced degree.  His two degrees in theater were sufficient and he then planted a church for his ministerial "on the job training."

"I was ordained into the ministry by Pastor MacArthur Jollay at the Christ Church in Washington, DC on June 6, 1979. While I thought I should go to seminary, Pastor Jollay and several other pastors I consulted told me that I had enough degrees and that what I needed was on the job training. And that is what I did over the next 14 years as pastor of the Living Word fellowship in Gaithersburg, Maryland (1980-1994).  This wonderful church was made up of Jews and Gentiles and people from almost every denomination. We were an interdenominational church."

Note:  Christ Church has been contacted directly and they have not been able to find a record of Stan's ordination. Stan has been repeatedly asked to produce his ordination credentials but has refused. The issue of Stan's ordination was first raised by IRS investigators who were investigating Stan Telchin Ministries, Inc.  I have never seen my father's ordination and I am of the opinion that he is not ordained as he claims.  I was in attendance on the Sunday he claims he was ordained.  I do not recall him being ordained that day as following a typical Sunday morning service several people went forward and were prayed over. This happens all the time in churches every Sunday all across America. Since that Sunday, my father has claimed he was ordained and has since used 'reverend' in his title. I have never once seen any ordination credentials of any kind and my father has refused to produce his ordination credentials (click here for more information).

There is no doubt but that Stan claims to be ordained. In October 2002, he filed a sworn affidavit with the Manatee County Circuit Court and signed under oath as "Rev. Stan Telchin" (click here to see that document). In Spring 2006, a high ranking official with the Assemblies of God and former presbyter had an exhaustive search done both on the national and local level to locate Stan's ordination, as Christ Church, where he claimed to have been ordained, is a part of that denomination. The presbyter concluded that the Assemblies of God and Christ Church had never ordained Stan, as he claims. The presbyter also said that no local church as a member of the Assemblies of God was permitted to ordain anyone they wanted but that strict guidelines had to be adhered to (click here to read the official Assemblies of God View of Ordination). The presbyter further stated that he personally knew Pastor Jollay of Christ Church when he was alive. He said that given Stan's lack of religious training and experience, Pastor Jollay would not have ordained him as he claims.

Note:  Living Word Fellowship dissolved after a financial scandal involving a building program. The church no longer exists. What was left of the congregation was merged into Halpine Church, associated with the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, (www.halpinechurch.org), John Bayles, Pastor, located at 5906 Halpine Road, Rockville, Maryland, 20851, telephone: 301.984.1454, e-mail: halpineemail@aol.com.  In 2000, Stan would claim that Halpine Church had cheated him out of $80,000.00. He consulted with a lawyer and said he had a good chance of winning if he wanted to spend $10,000.00 to go to court. He would later drop the matter saying that God has provided in other ways. There is not and never has been any reason to suggest or even believe that Halpine Church cheated him out of $80,000.00. Following the dissolution of Living Word Fellowship, Stan started Stan Telchin Ministries, Inc. which would be forfeited by the State of Maryland (click here) in 1999 and eventually closed in December 2002 following an audit by the IRS and investigation by the Manatee County Sheriff's Office and the FBI (click here for audit results).

"While I did, of course, continue to study on an informal basis (church history, homiletics, etc.) I was not formally enrolled in a seminary program for an advanced degree."

Note: Stan has claimed in his public testimony to have a Ph.D. and frequently in his public testimony has stated that he has "part of his Ph.D."  and that he is "extremely intelligent." Stan has been asked repeatedly to produce his Ph.D. credentials and to disclose what Ph.D. program he was in, at what institution and when.  He has refused (click here for more information).  There is no evidence whatsoever that shows that Stan has a Ph.D. or was ever even in a Ph.D. program. On March 21, 2004, Stan spoke at Christ Community Church and said to his audience, "I don't know if I made this point crystal clear to you; I am extremely intelligent. People respect me all over the world. I have all kinds of advanced degrees... with my advanced degrees and education." On July 21, 2002, he spoke at Terrace Palms Community Church and said, "Remember, I have a BA, an MA, and part of my Ph.D. I had a BA, an MA, and part of my Ph.D. I was a very educated man. You've got to remember, I have a BA, an MA, and part of my Ph.D. - and now I do have it."  In his written testimony as found at www.lifestory.org, he states, "I got my BA, my MA, part of my Ph.D." Stan does not have a Ph.D. and has never been in a Ph.D. program. On April 17, 2004, a donor to Jews for Jesus wrote David Brickner, Executive Director, Jews for Jesus, a letter and asked Mr. Brickner to clarify Stan's many repeated public claims regarding his Ph.D. On May 3, 2004, Mr. Brickner wrote the individual back and said, "As far as your question regarding Stan Telchin's education, he does not have a Ph.D. and does not claim to have a Ph.D. If Stan did mis-speak I have no doubt that he would be quick to acknowledge what I am saying here. I hope that clears up the matter for you. (click here)" Mr. Brickner's response does not clear the matter up as Stan refuses to explain his Ph.D. comments and clearly, even Jews for Jesus is unaware of the extent to which Stan has talked about his Ph.D. Stan also made the same claim on a radio appearance with Focus On The Family. When his PhD comments were brought to their attention, they cancelled a second appearance and stopped selling his books (click here). My father should explain his Ph.D. comments and put this matter to rest.

ON HIS HOME CHURCH:

"My home church is the Church of Hope, 6461 Proctor Road, Sarasota, Florida, 34241.  Pastor Scott Young is my pastor and knows me quite well."

ON HIS MINISTERIAL LICENSE:

"I should point out that in addition to my ordination by Christ Church in 1979, I became licensed by the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel (about the year 1990).  I am now listed by them as a retired minister."

Note: On September 20, 2004, the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel wrote and stated that, "Presently Stan is not carrying his credentials with us."

ON HIS HONORARY DOCTORATE:

"In 2001, the American Bible College and Seminary in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, granted me an honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree."

Note: Now known as American Christian College and Seminary (www.abcs.edu).  Stan was given an honorary doctorate of divinity for serving as commencement speaker on May 12, 2001.  American Christian College and Seminary, as of this writing (August 25, 2004), does not issue any degrees and recently the college lost their accreditation. According to the college, they issue only a Diploma of Theology and a Diploma of Christian Counseling. Two churches have reported that Stan presented himself to them as 'Dr. Telchin' without disclosing his doctorate is honorary.  While the honorary doctorate entitles Stan to use 'Dr.' in his title, two churches expressed concern that they introduced Stan from the pulpit to their congregations as 'Dr. Telchin' only to learn afterwards that his doctorate was honorary and not earned (click here for more information).

BOOKS WRITTEN BY STAN TELCHIN:

On January 25, 2004, Stan spoke at Living Word Church in Florida, and stated regarding 'Betrayed!,' that "More than 10 million - 10 million - 10 million people have read it." A couple weeks later on February 15, 2004, at Venice Bible Church, he told his audience that "More than 12 million people have read it." On February 24, 2004, I contacted Stan's publisher, Chosen Books, and asked how many copies of 'Betrayed!' had been distributed worldwide since first publishing.  On March 3, 2004, Chosen Books wrote back and said, "We don't actually know the real figure, but it is closer to 1.2 million than 12 million."  A follow-up phone call was then made to the sales department at Chosen Books, and without identifying Stan as the claimant, Chosen books was informed that a claim had been made that 10 to 12 million people had read 'Betrayed!'.  Chosen Books responded saying, "That's crazy! Mr. Telchin would not appreciate that misrepresentation. Please correct the person." (click here to learn more)

ON CIRCUMSTANCES INVOLVING HIS CONVERSION:

Stan spoke at Venice Bible Church on February 15, 2004 during which he related the following,

"Monday night after work, I sit down in the den and somehow there are all of these Bibles in the room. They weren't there Sunday morning; they weren't there Sunday night - but Monday night they are there. Where did they come from?  We had a housekeeper. Her name was Heyde. She was a Baptist lady."

This was a version of his testimony that I had never heard before and I was concerned as it was an outright manufactured lie that the congregation at Venice Bible Church believed.  I immediately called Heyde, with whom I have remained very close, and read her word for word what my father said at Venice Bible Church.  Heyde vehemently denied what Stan said about her and called his version a "fantasy." My father's version at Venice Bible Church also contradicted what he wrote in his book 'Betrayed!' (which he sold afterwards) as on page 33 and 34 of chapter four, he writes (click here),

"Sunday night... when we got home, I began to gather the material I thought I would need. I was surprised at how much was available. First I dug out my copy of the Soncino edition of the Torah. I had a pocket-sized New Testament... as well as the King James and American Standard versions. I set these up near my chair in the den. I was too tired to begin that Sunday night but was determined to begin the very next night.  On Monday I rushed home from work and left the kitchen for the den."

His version as he gave it at Venice Bible Church directly contradicted his version as he wrote in 'Betrayed!' '.  Further, both versions contradict what he wrote in another version as found at www.powertochange.org in which Stan writes,

"So the night she (Judy) left, I picked up the New Testament and began to read Matthew."

SUMMARY:

I cannot and do not affirm my father's testimony as being truthful in all respects.  My father has been caught in too many contradictions and when confronted with these contradictions by myself and others, he has refused to explain or correct the record.  Because of my father's many contradictions that he has presented in public, I cannot and do not affirm the story he tells of our family as found in his book 'Betrayed!' as being entirely truthful. He has presented several different versions of the same thing and the versions he has presented stand in factual contrast to one another.  He has repeatedly lied about our family and has grossly misrepresented the truth in many areas.  While every effort has been made by me and others (to include pastors and the former board member and treasurer of Stan Telchin Ministries) to confront my father and get him to answer for his apparent public lies and correct the erroneous public record he has created, he has refused.  His only response has been to hire lawyers and threaten lawsuits. My every attempt for all these years to reach my father have been met with dead silence. He even returns my mail to him unopened and marked 'refused' (click here).
