QUESTION 5: |
Did Stan lie about the circumstances of his conversion? |
|
ANSWER 5: |
You do not mention what church you heard Stan speak in, but based on what you shared and that you live in Venice, I think you might be referring to his February 15, 2004 appearance at Venice Bible Church in Venice, Florida. If you are referring to that appearance, then yes, he did lie. On the Monday following his appearance, I listened to the audio recording of his testimony and was shocked to hear him say, in the context of him preparing to study the Bible so as to prove that Jesus is not the Messiah as his daughter Judy has told him, the following: "Monday night after work... I sit down in the den, and somehow there are all of these Bibles in the room. They weren't there Sunday morning. They weren't there Sunday night - but Monday night they're there. Where did they come from? We had a housekeeper. Her name was Heyde. She was a Baptist lady." (source: audio recording from Venice Bible Church, February 15, 2004) After painting this miraculous story of "all these Bibles" being secreted, to his unawares, into his study, much to his surprise, my father's audience at Venice Bible Church responded with affirmation of the miracle working hand of God. The problem is, this scenario my father painted never happened. Not only did it never happen, but what he said to his audience that night actually contradicts what he wrote in his book "Betrayed!" which he sold after his appearance. In chapter 4 of "Betrayed!", my father writes a different version as follows, "Sunday night Ethel and I put Judy on the 7:30PM plane to Boston... When we got home, I began to gather the material I thought I would need. I was surprised at how much was available. First I dug out my copy of the Soncino edition of the Torah... I had a pocket sized New Testament... as well as the King James and American Standard Versions. I set these up near my chair in the den... I was too tired to begin that Sunday night but was determined to begin the very next night... On Monday night I rushed home from work... and left the kitchen for the den." (source: "Betrayed!" chapter 4) In his account in "Betrayed!", my father makes no mention of the Bibles being secreted into the study by the housekeeper to his unawares. Further, his account, as he gave it at Venice Bible Church, was the first time I had ever heard that account -- and I have heard my father speak so many times over the years I practically have his testimony memorized. His version at Venice Bible Church was a fabrication and I confirmed this by calling Heyde, with whom I remain very close, and related to her my father's account word for word. Heyde vehemently denied what Stan attributed to her and called his version "a fantasy." She further said, "That is absolutely not true! What is this man doing?" As if my father's account of what happened contradicted what he wrote in "Betrayed!' wasn't enough, there is yet a third version he tells that contradicts the previous two version. In his written testimony as found at www.powertochange.com, he writes the following, (source: www.powertochange.com printout dated August 20, 2004) Venice Bible Church was immediately informed of my father's misrepresentations and his testimony was removed from the church website. Venice Bible Church was also a church where Stan presented himself as 'Dr. Stan Telchin' without disclosing to that his doctorate was honorary (see question 2 for more information) and he also talked about his ordination which is in question (see question 3). He also claimed at Venice Bible Church that "More than 12 million people have read" his book "Betrayed!" That claim has since been proven to be questionable too (see question 4). I deeply regret my father's appearance at Venice Bible Church as what he did and represented in the name of Christ simply was not true. My father needs to give a full account of what he did at Venice Bible Church and explain himself.
